Technology for Advancement of Learning
By: Prof. Alok K.Banerjee, Ex Vice-Chancellor,
University of Kalyani
In the twentieth century, higher education witnessed tremendous innovative developments which hava raised doubts about the desirability and viability of conventional face to face education imparted in classroom environment. A vast change has also occurred in the content area of the various courses in the traditional system. The alternative may cater to more flexible educational delivery, encourage self -learning and are more cost- effective than the conventional education. Today ,conventional universities, the world over the faced with the most difficult challenges, to meet the need for productive employment ,effective use of information and communication technologies (ICTs),flexible and lifelong learning , globalisation an inherent competitiveness and networking and partnership.
Technology combined with Education is a gaint step in the Educational scenario, Technology may help the educational process by :
Reaching to masses in a cost-effective way
Useful for the illiterates to learn with timing flexibility
Quality content to all
Tackling the pluralistic character of the country with diverse languages and religions
Initially, the popularity of radio inspired the Government to use this medium for propagation of public welfare programmes like family planning ,health awareness etc. This audio medium was also used for educational activities during early seventies. Gradually ,with the emergence and other welfare activities.
Today ,we are aware that audio and visual medium - Gyan Vani Doordarshan (partially) and Gyan -Darshan- channels are broadcasting the educational programmes regularly. This has enriched the extra curricular learning process.
Further EDUSAT will help in taking education to the doorsteps of the students and will also make it interactive "Learning when you want and at the speed you want" will become a reality as EDUSAT will use not only broadcasting but also interactivity . Besides ,it can also have the advantage of video -on -demand , data -broadcasting, easy storage and retrieval, examination through personal computers, Internet connectivity ,etc. thus distance education and open learning systems for higher education could be the biggest beneficiaries of EDUSAT.
The need of the hour is therefore to prepare student for the challenging knowledge-based economy and society, champion the cause of life-long learning and stimulate the creation of world-class knowledge recourses and universal access to them through IT tools. Thus in today's context higher education , distance and open learning systems and ICT go hand in hand essentially become more of a package deal .In the era of globalisation and the information age, quality higher education become a pre-requisite. And in order to reach out to the large numbers and to address the issues like educational disparities and varieties of requirements from education ,distance and open learning systems. And in order to reach out to the large numbers and to address the issues like educational disparities and variety of requirements form education ,distance and open learning become useful means. ICT and digital connectivity through satellite to reach the remote areas can help significantly the leveraging of distance and open learning systems. And this is where EDUSAT can play a substantial role.
In this current technology based educational scenario , Kalyani University has come to meet the challenge of the time. A number of new courses breaking the traditional model are being introduced in the University departments and its affiliated colleges, the institute of mass communication Film and Television studies is one of these. To foster to the need of the society ,either for mass education or be it for agriculture , health sciences or any other section , we have been realizing that a good number of technical persons are required who could handle the technology based programme through television. Media Studies and Mass Communication Film and Television Studies therefore , have enough scope in the current scenario to train young man and woman who could handle the issues relating mass communication ,particularly, through television, It has been observe that almost in every town there are cable operators working in the transmission of programmes of Television Network without any technical knowledge in the subject matter. We have also felt the requirement to make among people distance education effective with the help of modern technology may be through EDUSAT. Therefore ,there is enough justification and a need for developing a curriculum within the University System and for knowledge based sound young persons who could be very useful in the society .The traditional University degrees, particularly, the general courses are gradually becoming devalued and are not market oriented or fruitful to the need of the society. Therefore diversification of various courses and to develop curriculum in the new emerging areas are the order of the day in this perspective the courses offered by the Institute of Mass Communication Film and Television Studies have made a meaningful presence in the educational scenario of the State. The Seminar "Vision Unlimited" organized by the institute will be meaningful and I am sure the speakers will unearth many relevant perspectives of such a new curriculum specially to cater to the need of the time.
